About Santiago

foto Santiago de Chile is the economic and administrative capital of the country. With five million inhabitants, the city was founded in 1541. Santiago is located at the bottom of the Western slopes of the Cordillera de Los Andes and an hour away from the Pacific Ocean, making it the ideal starting point for many trips and different activities.

Santiago is divided in 32 districts (‘comunas’) each administered by their respective city halls. Downtown Santiago houses the headquarters for many banks and government entities. Meanwhile, commercial companies have been moving to the East of the city, to districts such as Providencia, Vitacura and Las Condes. Most of the hotels, banking and entertainment areas are also located in these three districts. Santiago’s industrial zone is in the North and Northwest, in the districts of Quilicura, Huechuraba and Pudahuel, while the South and West sectors are mostly residential.

The city’s diverse architecture, which contrasts old and new, and their cultural influences have made Santiago a cosmopolitan city where you can enjoy artistic activities, visit appealing shopping malls and find a diverse international food offer combined with the delicious company of Chilean wine.

Geographic Location

Chile is located between the Cordillera de los Andes and the Pacific Ocean, on a thin strip of land that runs below 350 kilometers at its widest. The country runs from its Northern frontier with Peru and Bolivia, to the Antarctic, which houses several military and scientific bases, which compose the Chilean Antarctic Territory.

Weather

Santiago has a Mediterranean weather with well-defined seasons. Springtime goes from September to November, with moderate temperatures, which contribute to the blooming and regeneration of plants and trees. Summertime lasts from December thru February, and it’s dry and hot with temperatures that can go over 30ºC, with chillier nights.
Average annual rainfall in Santiago is 384 millimeters.
